WESTMINSTER – The Vietnamese American Arts & Letters Association (VAALA), with support from the Kenneth Picerne Foundation, will launch two Hát Bội classes conducted by veteran artist Ngọc Bày. These classes are FREE and open to everyone. Students older than 12 are encouraged to register. One class will be held every Sunday, from 2pm-3:30pm; the second class every Thursday, from 6:30pm-8:00pm.

To register for these classes, please email or call VAALA (714) 891-8172. Classes will be taught in Vietnamese. Students are required to read Vietnamese fluently. No prior experiences in theater or Vietnamese traditional music required.

Each quarter lasts 3 months. The entire program runs one year. After each quarter, students will have opportunities to perform Hát Bội excerpts in a recital. Students will learn the various modes of Hát Bội singing, movement, dance, make-up, and costume making.

This is a way to keep Hát Bội alive,” says Ysa Le, VAALA’s Executive Director.

Kính thưa quý vị,

Thấm thoát đã 34 năm, kể từ ngày 30 tháng 4 năm 1975, khi Cộng sản Bắc việt nhuộm đỏ miền Nam thân yêu, tạo nên một thảm họa lớn nhất trong lịch sử dân-tộc. Hàng triệu người đã bỏ nước ra đi, nhà tù được dựng lên khắp nơi trên toàn quốc, một chế độ lao tù khốc liệt nhất được áp đặt lên tất cả Quân, Cán, Chính Quân-lực Việt-Nam Cộng-hòa, người dân cả nước bị đẩy đến tận cùng của sự nghèo đói, cơ cực, lầm than!

Bằng bàn tay sắt, không khoan nhượng, mong biến đồng bào ta thành những kẻ nô-lệ trung thành, biến mỗi công dân thành một người tù dự khuyết! Đảng Cộng sản Việt Nam đã lộ nguyên hình là tay sai đắc lực của bè lũ bá quyền Cộng-sản Trung hoa, ngoài việc cắt đất, dâng biển của Cha Ông cho Tầu Cộng, chúng còn ngang nhiên thách thức cả Dân tộc khi cương quyết cho Trung quốc tiến hành dự án Bôxít Tây nguyên, với âm mưu phá hủy toàn bộ môi trường sống của đồng bào ta, đặt Đại bản doanh chiến lược khống chế toàn bộ khu vực Đông dương.

Trước cảnh nước mất, nhà tan hôm nay, chúng ta bùi ngùi nhớ đến những chiến sĩ Quân lực Việt Nam Cộng Hòa, những người con ưu-tú của Tổ quốc, sẵn sàng hy-sinh mạng sống mình để ngăn chặn làn sóng đỏ, tiêu diệt chế-độ vô thần, vô luân, tàn bạo nhất trong lịch sử nhân-loại, để chúng ta được hưởng không khí tự do của miền Nam thân yêu, nhưng định mệnh oan nghiệt, đã phải nghẹn ngào buông súng! Chúng ta tưởng niệm gần 300 ngàn chiến sĩ đã hysinh, chúng ta sót xa cho trên 700 ngàn thương phế binh Quân lực VNCH đang sống vất vưởng ngay chính tại quê hương mình!

Như một hành động tri ân, Cộng đồng Việt Nam tại Massachusetts trân trọng kính mời quý vị tham dự Lễ Vinh Danh Quân Lực VNCH và tiệc gây quỹ giúp Thương phế binh VNCH tại Việt-Nam, được tổ-chức vào ngày Chủ Nhật 21 tháng 06 năm 2009 cùng với sự tham dự của Ca Nhạc sĩ VIỆT-ZŨNG, ca sĩ ĐOÀN-PHI cùng các ca sĩ danh tiếng tại địa phương như: Hoàng Vân, Hoàng Thông, Thành An, Ngọc Diễm, Phương Anh, Thuý Phượng, Ngọc Trâm.

Vietnamese “Boat People” Are Subject of May 2 Symposium

In the years following the Vietnam War, more than 1 million refugees fled the war-ravaged countries of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Those who took to the ocean in small, overcrowded ships were dubbed the “boat people.” Many perished on the seas, some at the hands of pirates, while others took refuge in Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Indonesia.  By the late 1970s and 1980s, the United States, Canada and other nations accepted many of those who survived the refugee camps.
The plight of these refugees is the subject of a symposium titled “Journey to Freedom: The Boat People Retrospective,” to be held at the Library of Congress from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, May 2, in Room 119 of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First Street S.E., Washington, D.C.
The symposium, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Library’s Asian Division and the Asian Division Friends Society, with support from the Voice of Vietnamese Americans, Boat People S.O.S. Inc., the National Congress of Vietnamese Americans and individuals from the Vietnamese American communities in the Greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Senator James Webb (D-Va.) will deliver the opening keynote address. Rep. Joseph Q. Cao (R- La.) will be the luncheon keynote speaker.  
Scholars, community leaders and former refugees will discuss the topic in four sessions: “Historical Background,” “Exodus,” “Rescue and Hospitality,” and “Remembering Who We Are and Where We Have Been.”
Drawn from the Library’s collections, a display of literature on the Vietnamese boat people will be on view throughout the day in the Asian Division Reading Room, Room 150 of the Thomas Jefferson Building. In the reading room, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., several authors will sign their books on the subject, which will be available for purchase.
Two short films, to be shown at 2 p.m., will depict the resettlement process: “Waiting Days at Morong, Bataan” and “The Hong Kong Resettlement Village.”
Founded in 1800, the Library of Congress is the nation’s oldest federal cultural institution. The Library seeks to spark imagination and creativity and to further human understanding and wisdom by providing access to knowledge through its magnificent collections, programs and exhibitions. Many of the Library’s rich resources can be accessed through its website at www.loc.gov and via interactive exhibitions on a new, personalized website at myLOC.gov.
The Asian Division is the central repository for all types of Asian publications that are not broadly available at other locations in the United States. Initiated in 1869 with a gift of 10 works in 934 volumes offered to the United States by the Emperor of China, the Library’s Asian collection of more than 2 million items is the largest and most comprehensive outside of Asia.
In 2007, the Asian Division began collaborating with cultural and educational institutions throughout the United States to build an Asian Pacific American (APA) collection in the Library of Congress. Currently, the APA Collection includes the Betty Lee Sung Collection, the Carlos Bulosan Archives, the Jade Snow Wong Collection, the James Miho Conceptual Diaries and the Royal Morales Collection. It also includes the Vietnamese American Archives, which houses   archival refugee materials donated by Boat People S.O.S. Inc. and VOICE (Vietnamese Overseas Initiative for Conscience Empowerment), a U.S.-based-non-profit organization.
